GDF Backstory
The Global Defence Force (GDF) is a paramilitary international rapid-reaction force formed from the various national armies and relief agencies in reaction to natural and terrorist disasters of the early 21st Century. It is the only military force with the equipment, command structure and mobility to defend Earth from the Strogg invasion. The GDF forces are humanity’s brightest and best; they represent Earth’s first and only line of defence against the pitiless Strogg raiders.

Id Software has recalled the Quake 4 1.1 patch because "there is a problem with the widescreen functionality that may harm a user's monitor". If you have not installed this patch already then just hold out, if you have, it is recommended that you neither enable or disable the widescreen support.

ID has released some new screens from the upcoming multiplayer game Enemry Territory: Quake Wars. The game looks great, in fact it is likely the best looking game to come out of the ID development team in a long time. The game is still built on the Doom3 engine, but it has been tweaked to the max. This outdoor multiplayer game that includes vehicles and many other forms of transportation is doing well said Westwood. Apparently one of the key changes is the addition of the "megatexture," something that Carmack himself came up with. It is basically a way to cover 32,000 pixels square with one trexture. This translates into entirely unique landscape from start to end. Finally, this may be the game that puts ID back on the map. They are innovating once again, thankfully. In the latest issue of PCZone magazine, there are a few new Quake Wars details. This game is headed to both the PC and the Xbox360 (speculation) as of now, and it has been likened to Battlefield 2 in the Quake universe. According to the magazine, the game will be a prequel to Quake 2, and will feature different environments inlcuding a forest map. The game has been significantly brightened, no more Doom3/Quake IV style blackness. The optimum number of players per map is 24-32, now word if 64 will be supported. Every map will have its own history and objectives, there will be no games modes due to this fact. Each side will feature unique infiltration, offense, defense, and support classes, it will not be symmetrical. Also, Strogg medics will be able to use human flesh to heal their comrades, pretty cool. No release date for this game has been announced, but it should appear sometime next year.
