Why is all this change good you ask? Why re-learn the game using the Pro Stick control system? Believe me folks, I am usually the first to gripe about something that has been changed in a game, when it was not broken in the first place. Why game developers feel the need to touch already perfected game protocols is beyond me, but this time around, it is worth it. The main benefit is that the PS control gets your thumbs off the face buttons, and keeps them off. Eventually, we will play all our sports games using mainly the two analog sticks, with the buttons only used for calling plays and changing in-game options. Both EA and 2K have begun the long hard shift over to this method, and eventually, we will all need to learn it, so we might as well start now.

Enough about the Pro Stick control though, because I have said all that needs to be said at this point. Those of you who are going to use it, will use it, and those who want to go back to the traditional classic controls, will do so. Do not fear either, you classic control users, all the options and settings are there from last year, and by not using the Pro Stick control, you lose nothing except practice using the new method.

All the modes that you have come to expect in the 2K games are present this year as well. The quick game mode, the mini-game and party game modes, the online mode, and again, a very deep and involved franchise mode. Beyond the rosters, line edits, schedules, and more, 2K8 has even gone further into the front office management sect of the game. You have to keep players happy with their on-ice time, deal with irate e-mails from your owners, and even deal with player’s agents who want more exposure, money, and your blood.

This is a great time too, if you are someone who enjoys the franchise mode. Say you need a free agent for your team to fill a position that is lacking. So you have some hot shot new player in mind. Well, all I can say is, you better be prepared to break the bank paying for him. This is realistic folks, he is not going to come cheap, and he knows it. Now if he gets injured, or performs badly, then you have just squandered a serious chunk of your budget. Welcome to professional hockey management folks, and 2K Sport’s accurate portrayal of it on the Xbox360.

Now, if you do not have the heart to hire and fire and spend the big bucks, you can always have the computer do it for you, and skip as much or as little of the management action as you like. It really is the premium mode of the entire game, if you have the time to put in, that is. 2K has built it like an RPG of sorts, as your players grow, they basically yearn what amounts to experience. The points are broken down between scoring, skating, defense, and mental and physical skills. If you play a specific player more, of course, he grows more skillful. Ideally, you want to end up with an entire team full of “veteran elite” players. Good luck with that though, as you may be buying NHL 2K9 by the time that happens.
