The multiplayer mode seems a bit tacked on, although it is certainly not the worst Xbox Live experience you can have. Whether you play over system link or online, up to 12 players can grab the games weapons and have at it. Death match, capture the flag, team games, and the other standard modes you have come to expect from multiplayer are all present. The graphical issues do follow the game into the multiplayer modes, but it is not anywhere near as bad as the single player. Payback’s multiplayer mode will offer you a few hours of enjoyment, but ultimately there are better Xbox Live titles out there. Soldier of Fortune: Payback is a decent FPS game that has some pluses and some minuses. Unfortunately, especially right now, many FPS game that do not “wow” us get lost in the shuffle because of all the great games in the genre that have been released. Combine this with the fact that the first two titles were really great games on the PC, and it certainly disappoints. The game does have its value though, and those of us who are fans of the FPS genre can pick up this game and make an enjoyable few nights out of it. Even those who are only partially interested will be able to get enjoyment out of the game, and no one can ever say that Soldier of Fortune: Payback cannot do gore and death right - albeit over the top. Hopefully, the developer’s next game, or even the next SOS sequel, will take some of the other issues mentioned here and resolve them. Rent this game if you're not sure; buy it if you are a diehard FPS fan - for everyone else, best to save money for the better FPS games out there. |
