Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection

The addition of the playable Jinpachi character is another nice bonus that Namco has thrown in, although you may not recognize him. It is not the end-game model that he appears with in this game, but the model that is used in the cut scenes before the boss fight. If you are not familiar with Jinpachi’s moves, do not fret. Namco has included a full command list for every single character in the game, and the list is accessible via the pause menu. Uppercuts, swipes, and ground hits, are all there for your learning pleasure, although there is no move that restores Jinpachi’s power like it did when he was a boss (thank god).

If I had to pick out one main drawback for T5:DR on the PS3, it would be the lack of modes. There is Arcade Mode, Ghost Mode, Versus Mode, Gallery Mode, and the options menu. Arcade mode is, of course, the traditional fight arena that we are all used to. Ghost mode allows you to fight Ghost A.I. version of real life fighters, and we assume in future you will be able to download more ghosts although now there is no option to do so. Gallery Mode is where you can unlock illustrations and CG movies from the entire Tekken series. Something to note here folks, these gallery items are not part of the initial download, believe it or not. When you gain enough Tekken money to download an item, the game will contact a download server and grab the item from the net. As well, the CG movies, in case you were wondering, are identical to the PSP CG movies in the PSP version of T5:DR.

In addition to the extra characters and updated graphics, the PS3 version of the game has changed the interface a bit, streamlining things. The character select screen and the item shop are now one, so you can purchase and equip items after you have selected your fighter. US Tekken players will be used to this, but we are told the Japanese versions did not feature this streamlined interface. The game itself does not have any other additions or bonuses to speak of, but hasn’t Namco already given us enough?

While some may maintain that this is just a money making scheme by Sony, a way to both offset the upcoming Virtua Fighter release and fill the void until a real PS3Tekken release is available, we say, so what if it is? The game is a $15 USD or so purchase, and for the amount of game play and goodies that you get, it is one of the best values available on the PS3 to date. As we said, the game is not available in the US PS3 store yet, but that should not stop you from grabbing the game using our workaround. You can also download the game up to 5 times using the same account. This means you can lend the Japanese account you bought the game with to a friend so he can download T5: DR on his PS3. $15 dollars split three ways is certainly worth it, folks. We can recommend this game without question.
