For some reason, the village of Doolin contains a nexus point between our world and the netherworld -- the land of the dead. It is not uncommon for creatures called faerys to inhabit the town once darkness falls. In fact, if you visit the pub after dark, you will find a slew of friendly faerys to talk to and glean information from. Both Ellen and Keats also acquire their own personal fairy guide to the netherworld. These guides are invaluable, and will provide all the information you need to progress as the game moves along.

The game's adventures span between the netherworld and the real world village of Doolin. During the daytime you will find yourself spending time wandering around the village looking for clues and “mementos of the dead.” These mementos are used to open the gate to the netherworld once nightfall comes. The first night of the game falls on a special occasion, so entering the netherworld does not require a memento. From that point on though, you will need to search and talk to the villagers a regular basis. The game contains just the right balance between real world and netherworld playtime.

It is hard to explain just how the gameplay in Folklore works. As you progress through the netherworld each new type of creature that you kill will provide you with a “soul” of sorts. Each creature’s soul, also called an “id,” contains a different ability that the player can equip and use during combat. For example, the first two creatures you will defeat will provide you with a defensive shield and a melee combat attack. You can then equip these in any of the four PS3 button slots. From then on, any time you tap the button assigned to that creature’s id, you will perform the melee attack or equip the defense shield. Of course, as the game progresses, you will receive more powerful enemy ids, which equate to more powerful attacks.

In order to obtain these enemy “ids,” you must use the SixAxis pad. Once you have damaged an enemy to a certain point, a faded red image of said “id” will appear above the stunned enemy. At this point, you must use the PS3's SixAxis motion control system to basically lasso the enemy id and add it to your stock. If you defeat an enemy whose id you already possess, it will simply add to your soul count for that enemy. Once you reach a certain number of souls for a specific enemy, it will become easier to defeat that specific enemy from then on. I know all of this sounds overwhelming on paper, but believe me when I tell you that Game Republic has utilized the SixAxis motion control in one of the most intuitive ways I have yet seen. All you must do to capture a soul is hold down the R1 button and slightly jerk the controller back. It will all become old hat to you after the first few maps.
