Unfortunately, this combat mechanic also leads to one of the games primary flaws -- repetition. Once you get the hang of defeating enemies and grabbing their souls, you will find that is about all there is to the game's combat. Of course there is a great amount of fun in obtaining new enemy ids and new abilities, and the game does vary the SixAxis motions required to lasso the ids slightly, neither factor is enough to defeat the repetition problem.

The graphics in Folklore are certainly impressive. They are not the best that the PS3 has to offer, but the atmosphere combined with the motion and animation quality make for a very good looking title. You can certainly tell this game was made for next-gen. The light sourcing, shadowing, and reflections are all spot on, and since the game has both night and day scenarios, you will be treated to seeing the same objects lit and unlit.

This also leads to the second drawback of Folklore -- the frame rate. While most times, the lush graphics and fully orchestrated sound come off without a hitch, when the heat of battle hits hard, the frame rate will most certainly take a nosedive. Fortunately it does not happen often, and when it does happen, it does not fall below a level where the game becomes unplayable. Still, it is noticeable, and it is annoying at times.

On top of the single player mode Game Republic has also included a build your own dungeon mode. Not only that, but you can share these dungeons online and have other players test their mettle inside your creations. Sadly, the editor is very simplistic and does not give players much control over what they are building at all. All players can do is set a certain number of pieces on to a grid. Still, the mode is a welcome addition, and a welcome break from the single player mode which, as I said, can get tedious and repetitive.

Folklore has many other nuances and minutiae that I could spend 10 more pages discussing. The game is one of the best the PS3 has to offer for the time being. Folklore is a quirky action adventure survival horror melee combat RPG with puzzle elements thrown in for good measure. If that is not enough to appeal to almost all gamers out there, then my suggestion is to find a new hobby. Folklore looks, plays, and feels great despite its flaws. If you are looking for something on the PS3 to pass the time until the heavy hitting games start appearing, then Folklore is for you. If you are just looking for a great game that spans genres and cannot be classified, then Folklore is also for you. Even if you are just looking for a weekend rent, Folklore is for you.
