If anyone knows how to make a hack and slash RPG type game, it is Sony Online Entertainment. SOE is, of course, behind the revolution Everquest MMO, and the spin-off hack and slash, Champions Of Norrath on the PS2. Now SOE has their shot on the new PS3, a next-gen system, but unfortunately Dark Kingdom has some decidedly last-gen features. For those who were wondering, the game’s storyline is loosely connected to the Untold Legends series on the PSP. The game’s story takes place in the land of Dureth, and as is customary, the land is plagued by barbarians and uprisings. As a member of the elite Dragon’s Shade, you are charged with keeping order in the land. You also have been granted a special power as a member of the Shade, you are able to absorb essence from the enemies you defeat. All is well until you defeat one barbarian leader who tells you that the king has fallen under the spell of an evil priestess, and he is wreaking havoc in the capital city by turning his soldiers into horrible beasts that slay and capture the townsfolk. Of course, you take it upon yourself to restore peace to the land and stop the king at all costs. The game itself offers somewhere around 15 hours of game play through various settings and lands, although mostly the levels are buildings and cities once you pass a certain point in the game. You will be able to select the Warrior, Scout, or Mage when you begin. Each class has their own strong points and drawbacks, as with any game. The Warrior is slow but powerful, the Scout is fast but weaker, and the Mage is, well he is a mage, enough said. Each character has a slightly different plotline, so the game does offer some replayability in that area. The game also offers four levels of difficulty, although you will find that the normal level is hard enough to make you want to smash the PS3 pad from time to time. The characters do play different from each other, but not enough to make the initial character choice a pivotal one. The character’s differences fall by the wayside because you will more than likely find yourself using the X-X-X combo almost all the time, with the square button thrown in here and there for good measure. One nice feature is that as you mash the buttons, you will see combos that are available with the next button press in the bottom left of the screen. You will gain new combos as you level up, although you will find that the combos you obtain around level 5 or so serve you well for the rest of the game. |
